Portability

Hello all,

I was wondering if it would be possible to install beets onto my removable drive and use it from there on different machines and operating systems.

I have already seen that another user runs beets in a PortableApps framework.

Can I have one beets version for Windows and one for Linux to access the same music database? (Not AT the same time)

Is there a howto for this or information how to do it so I can make one by myself?

Thanks in advance and a nice day to you all.

Best regards, wts

I’m not aware of anyone has tried installing beets itself on a removable drive. But you could just consider installing beets on both machines and then setting up the beets configuration on both machines to point to the appropriate mountpoint where the music appears. You could even configure both beets instances to look for their database on the removable drive. A tricky problem you might run into is that the beets database stores absolute paths.

Thank you for the information. (And of course the good work you all are doing on beets  )
I will give it a try and keep you updated.

Nice weekend to you all. :upside_down_face:

Edit: Is there any technical reason for the absolute path?

Mostly it’s just a difficult engineering problem… there’s more in this thread!
